Gordon Smart to host regular weeknight show on BBC Radio 5 Live

Gordon’s new late night show starts on Monday 1 January at 10pm

From Monday 1 January, award-winning journalist and broadcaster Gordon Smart will expand his presenting on BBC Radio 5 Live as the new host of the late night show from 10pm-1am.

As well as presenting his Sunday show 8pm-10pm, Gordon will bring late night discussion and guests to listeners from Monday to Thursday, as he reflects on the day’s biggest news and sport stories.

Gordon has been a part of the wider 5 Live presenting team for over a year, filling in on a variety of programmes on the station – from Breakfast to Drive – quickly making an impact on listeners, and in July, he landed his own weekly Sunday night show from Glasgow.

On his new appointment, Gordon says: “I am thrilled to be given the weeknights gig on 5 Live. It has been such a privilege working with the hugely talented team here over the last 18 months. The welcome I’ve been given from staff and listeners has been really special and I’m really looking forward to getting to know them even better.”

He continues: “I love the station and have been a huge fan for a long time. I can’t wait to get stuck in alongside some of the best in the business.”

BBC Radio 5 Live Controller, Heidi Dawson says: “Late night radio listeners need a presenter who’s great company, and Gordon definitely is that. A sharp journalist and brilliant storyteller with great sporting insights, Gordon will be a fantastic companion for our evening audiences.”

Gordon’s shows from Glasgow and Salford are an important part of the BBC’s Across the UK strategy, bringing the corporation closer to audiences to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the UK. By 2027/28 the BBC will be spending at the very least, an extra £700m cumulatively across the UK – generating an additional economic benefit of over £850 million. This will not only dramatically increase opportunities for jobs and training but improve representation on and off screen.

Gordon will start his new late night show on Monday 1 January at 10pm.
