North Georgia-Based Songwriter Confronts the Truth
February 2, 2025 – Acclaimed songwriter and fiddler Wyatt Espalin is set to release his latest single, Liar, a powerful and confrontational track that offers a striking introduction to his upcoming debut full-length album, Lies From the Lonesome Valley. Scheduled for release in Fall 2025, the album will showcase Espalin’s deeply personal yet universally resonant storytelling.
But who is Espalin confronting in Liar? A lover? Or is the sentiment even more personal? As the North Georgia-based artist approaches his milestone 50th birthday this summer, he reflects on his life and career, sifting through memories to reconstruct his musical identity. Lies From the Lonesome Valley is a collection of songs—or “lies”—that take creative liberties with the events that shaped Espalin’s journey, all while exposing some of his deepest truths. Designed to keep listeners on their toes, Liar and the rest of the album invite audiences to find their own meaning in the lyrics and stories of this complex and compelling artist.
The track was recorded at 460 Sound Studios in Cleveland, GA, with production by Wyatt Espalin and Gavin Calzaretta, who also engineered, mixed, and mastered the song. The recording features an impressive lineup of musicians:
Wyatt Espalin – Lead and Backing Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica
Erin Worley – Banjo & Backing Vocals
Grace Pettis – Backing Vocals
Roland Royal – Backing Vocals
Liz Petty – Backing Vocals
Zach Kilmer – Pedal Steel
Ryan Plumley – Electric Guitar
Pat Strawser – Organ & Wurlitzer
Drew Lawson – Bass
Colin Agnew – Drums & Percussion
Born in Los Angeles but raised in the Appalachian foothills of North Georgia by his grandparents, Espalin’s love for music was sparked at a young age. A state champion clogger and Appalachian buck dancer, he quickly developed a passion for storytelling through song. Over the years, he has won over audiences with his magnetic stage presence, sharp wit, and evocative songwriting.
Lies From the Lonesome Valley will be a milestone release for Espalin, featuring his band, The Riverstones, as well as special guests, including Amy Ray of Indigo Girls and singer-songwriter Grace Pettis. Returning to his roots, Espalin’s new songs wrestle with identity, home, and the evolving nature of truth. Whether performing solo, as a duo, or with his full band, Espalin’s music continues to captivate listeners with its haunting authenticity and Appalachian spirit.
