True North returns this summer with a new three-part series

True North returns on to BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer on 12 August for new three-part series

August 1, 2024 – This summer True North returns to BBC Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer on Monday 12 August, and from darts competitions to canine heroes and a mysterious noise in a County Tyrone town, this series reflects many aspects of life in Northern Ireland.

The stakes are high in True North: Darts City as we follow the fortunes of four players aiming to hit the top spot in one of Europe’s biggest dart leagues.

Finals night is the most important event in the Newry City Darts League calendar and with only eight places available, it takes determination and skill to go the distance.

In this film, we meet Paul Irwin who has overcome 12 years of Dartitis, a psychological condition which severely damages performance and almost ended his love for the sport, and Anna Madigan, a grandmother of 11 who started throwing darts after her divorce and is now a six time champion.

Dylan Quinn, a carpenter by trade and rising star in the game, played against superstar Luke Littler last year and hopes to turn pro. We follow him to a competition in Budapest where he hopes to make his mark and improve his position in the European rankings.

Martin Carvill has played darts for 50 years. He now has a life limiting illness but refuses to let it limit his ambitions as he aims to take the stage on Finals night playing the sport he loves.

It takes months of practice and dedication to reach the top of the leaderboard in this competitive darts league. The programme follows the players in their bid to be crowned champions in their respective leagues.

Narrated by actor Martin McCann (Blue Lights), True North: Dart’s City airs Monday 12 August at 10.40pm on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer.

In True North: The Omagh Hum something is in the air, as a mysterious noise is claimed to be causing sleepless nights for residents in the County Tyrone town.

The rumour mill and conspiracy theories are buzzing as locals attempt to track down the source of this strange and persistent humming noise which is believed to have started in 2023 and captured both local and international media attention.

Finding the town in a state of exhaustion, local journalist Emmet McElhatton is determined to solve this mystery with the help of Jamie Ryan, a local repairman whose personal fascination with sound has inspired him to launch his own private investigation.

Will Emmet and Jamie’s search for the truth about the Omagh hum finally put the issue to bed and give Omagh’s residents a good night’s sleep?

This film looks at life in a small town and how some stories capture the imagination, taking on a life on their own.

True North: The Omagh Hum, made by Atom Films and Strident Media for BBC Northern Ireland, airs Monday 19 August at 10.40pm on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer.

True North: Pets Saving Lives follows a pack of dedicated canine heroes as they risk life, limb and paw, embarking on life-saving missions across Northern Ireland.

Led by a group of trained volunteer handlers, these search and rescue dogs have a special set of skills that are relied on to help rescue people from mountains, water and collapsed buildings, risking their own safety in extreme weather conditions and unsafe environments.

In this film, we follow search dogs and their handlers as they work to locate vulnerable people, carrying out rescue missions near Newcastle beach and on Cavehill Mountain.

In this film, we follow volunteer dog handlers and their beloved pets who together are always ready to help our emergency services. This film was made by Waddell Media for BBC Northern Ireland.

True North: Pets Saving Lives airs Monday 26 August at 10.40pm on BBC One Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer.
