Statement on Alsa Kurmasheva’s sentencing from The Washington Post’s Press Freedom Partnership

On July 19, Russian American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty was sentenced by a Russian court to 6½ years in prison in a closed sham trial – the same day Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years.

These bogus charges and severe sentences by the Kremlin serve to chill an independent media and trap the journalists as hostages and bargaining chips.

We continue to stand for Alsu, Evan, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Austin Tice, and all journalists facing unjust persecution. Stand with us. Share their story.
