23 April 2024 – Broadcaster and entrepreneur Spencer Matthews is undertaking the challenge of a lifetime this summer as he attempts to run 30 marathons in 30 days through the Jordanian desert to raise money for Global’s Make Some Noise. If successful, the feat will earn him the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive marathons run on sand.
The challenge will see Spencer run in soaring temperatures of up to 45 degrees, beginning in the undulating Wadi Rum on the edge of the Arabian desert and finishing near the Dead Sea.
Launching his mission on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, the money raised will support charities across the UK as part of Global’s Make Some Noise, the official charity of Global, the Media & Entertainment group.
“I love to push myself and I have always been fascinated by others who push physical boundaries. I would love for as many people as possible to get involved, help raise money for the vital community projects Global’s Make Some Noise funds and follow along on the journey.” – SPENCER MATTHEWS
In order to safely prepare for the challenge, which will take place from 29th July to 27th August, Spencer is undertaking a gruelling training regime, running more than 1,800km in preparation and acclimatising his body using sweat testing, and training for up to 15 consecutive days in a lab-controlled heat chamber set to 40C and 40% humidity, in an effort to mimic the conditions of the Jordanian desert.
“I’ve previously completed the Marathon de Sables (the world’s toughest foot race) and The Jungle Ultra, but this challenge is five times the length of each of these. Running on sand is a different beast all together. If my feet leave the sand at any point, that marathon will be void and I will have to start again.” – SPENCER MATTHEWS
The money raised during the challenge will help Global’s Make Some Noise to change lives across the UK, by supporting small charities to deliver vital services within their communities – tackling issues such as mental health, poverty and homelessness. Global’s Make Some Noise provides much needed funding to many charities who are facing growing waiting lists and unprecedented demand for their services, whilst facing increased costs and a downturn in donations.
“I’m looking to use the challenge to make as big a difference as possible for charity. Global’s Make Some Noise is incredible and makes a massive difference to the lives of so many people by supporting causes across the UK, some of which I have had the pleasure of meeting, so I am honoured to be getting behind the phenomenal work that they do. Having their work and your support front of mind will keep me going.” – SPENCER MATTHEWS
To qualify for the Guinness World Record, Spencer will need to run the full distance – 1,266km – on sand. He will not be able to cross roads, grass, rivers or other terrain during the 30 marathons, making the challenge a logistical, as well as physical and mental feat.
A dedicated adjudicator will be present during every marathon and will monitor Spencer’s progress in order for it to register as a successful Guinness World Record.
After announcing The Great Desert Challenge live on Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda today [TUES], Heart will be following Spencer’s journey throughout the challenge, providing listeners with regular on-air updates.
Speaking to Jamie and Amanda on-air, Spencer added: “I’ve always been interesting in how far the human mind and body can go; I’ve always been inspired by certain other events that have been achieved by athletes and just people in general. I’ve taken part in some really tough races, and I wanted to push the boat out this time and try my best to make as difference as possible.”
People can also follow Spencer’s daily updates through Global’s Make Some Noise and his Instagram and YouTube channels.
“We’re thrilled and incredibly grateful that Spencer is fundraising for Global’s Make Some Noise by taking on this amazing challenge. The money raised will allow us to make a difference to even more lives across the UK through the amazing projects we support.
Across the UK there are so many small charities that play a critical role in delivering vital services, providing a lifeline for those in their community. Many of these charities are faced with the growing challenge of meeting increasing demand for their services amidst rising costs so to have Spencer’s support to raise money so that we can keep funding these projects, and changing lives, is phenomenal.” –SUZANNE RYDER-RICHARDSON, DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL GOODNESS
