The three hour-long retro5pective highlighted some of the greatest and most beloved material from Joel Zimmerman pka deadmau5’ illustrious 25-year career in electronic music ranging from his first ever production “Bored Of Canada” to hits like “I Remember,” “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” and “The Veldt.” The packed Bowl was treated to a selection of never performed before edits and a visual array of mau5 visuals from performances past, and new graphics and lighting styles unique to each segment of the show.

Kicking it all off was BSOD, his early project with producer Steve Duda adding in DJ Aero and Tommy Lee for the fourtet that is WTF? Following came the tracks that injected deadmau5 into electronic music consciousness becoming perennial works of influence for future music makers, mid 2000 cuts “Faxing Berlin” and “Sometimes Things Get, Whatever.” deadmau5 then left the stage for a short interlude by German techno marching band MEUTE who performed with ‘funkeln’ a rump shaking brass rendition of classic mau5 cut “Slip.”

After the brass and beat ensemble left the stage, a kabuki drop revealed deadmau5’ massive touring production Cube V3 which has not been seen since 2020. From there the show continued elevating every fans delight. Perched high on the cube in the Hollywood Bowl’s legendary shell, a play was made on the 2008 HARD Haunted Mansion viral moment where a fake deadmau5 (Steve Duda) appeared. The real deadmau5 took his place, dawning Pinhead for “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff,” one of many different mau5head looks he would reveal throughout the show. The guest appearances continued to shine from there: SOFI performing mau5 cult fave “Sofi Needs A Ladder,” Kiesza who enchanted fans with her futuristic fairy, glitter dusted dance moves including handstands with Joel for “Bridged By A Lightwave,” LIGHTS with her outstanding tracks “Drama Free” and “When The Summer Dies,” and HAYLA whose soaring vocals took “Escape,” Kx5’s (his project with Kaskade) for its turn from Super Bowl to Hollywood Bowl.

For the show’s encore deadmau5 surprised audiences with a performance of “The Truth,” his upcoming collaboration with Los Angeles hip-hop collective Coast Contra. Details on the song will be announced soon.

Next look for deadmau5 and friends to head east for ‘retro5pective’ celebrations at The Brooklyn Mirage in New York City this Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3.
