It’s official: Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire is #1. The science fantasy film was the most viewed title on Netflix following its debut on Thursday, December 21 with 23.9M views.
An epic film deserves an epic rollout so Netflix took fans on a ride to the moon(s) and back, hosting immersive experiences, sneak-peek fan screenings and massive “moon takeovers” around the world.
Written and directed by Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon is a wholly original science fantasy epic about a peaceful moon settlement in the furthest reaches of the universe that finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical leader, and the mysterious stranger named Kora (Sofia Boutella) who becomes their best hope for survival.
“It’s been a truly unparalleled experience introducing Rebel Moon to global audiences and I’m thrilled that the movie is #1 around the world,” Snyder said in a statement. “We have the most dedicated and loyal fans across the world that any filmmaker could ask for, and seeing them consistently be supportive has been an enormously rewarding experience. We’re thrilled they are embracing the new world we’ve created in Part 1, and are excited for them to continue the journey next year with Part 2.”
We then kicked off our traveling immersive trailer experience at ComplexCon in Long Beach, California, followed by stops at CCXP in São Paulo where we also hosted the first screening of the film, as well as events in London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Melbourne, and Tokyo. More than 5,000 fans stepped onto a real movie set, where they went into hair, make-up, wardrobe and were armed with props to star in their own personalized Rebel Moon trailers.
For the week leading up to the film’s release on Netflix, we staged a series of “moon takeovers” in different locations and formats to introduce fans to the world of the film. During the holiday bustle in London and Milan, we wowed crowds with enormous moon installations surrounded by wheat fields next to the iconic Tower Bridge and Piazza Gae Aulenti, respectively, from December 15-17.
In Poland, we took over the Lublin Castle December 15-17, suspending enormous moon sculptures brought to life by brightly projected scenes from the film.
The excitement continued in Indonesia on December 16, where we installed a giant, eye-catching planet with lit-up 3D rings above a massive billboard for the film at the Senayan Trade Center (STC) in Jakarta.
On December 18, we kicked off a four-day takeover of the Nationaltheatret Station in Oslo, Norway where dozens of digital screens and banners were hung alongside a custom-built moon with rings.
For our grand finale, we assembled a first-of-its-kind drone show at Sphere in Las Vegas from December 18 to 20, recreating a 3D scene with the mysterious “wild card” Jimmy surrounded by hundreds of firefly drones.
We’re thrilled that millions around the world took one giant leap into the epic, original world of Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire, which is now available to stream on Netflix. The epic tale continues with Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver on April 19, 2024.
