Prime Video today announced that it has acquired the rights to BBC Studios’ global hit game show format, The 1% Club. The U.S. series will be produced by BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions and Magnum Media and will premiere on Prime Video in the U.S. and Canada.
The 1% Club is a unique, compelling and funny game show that tests the nation’s intelligence, based on a scientific survey. This entertainment format is not about what you learned at school or your ability to memorize facts. It’s a chance to test how your brain works through a series of questions that often lead to extremely entertaining answers. Everyone is on a level playing field which means anyone can play along. Whether you’re a contestant vying for the cash prize or a viewer playing with your friends and family, answer enough questions correctly and you could earn yourself a place in the 1% Club: an elite group of people who can honestly say they’ve outwitted 99% of the population.
The 1% Club, created by Dean Nabarro and Andy Auerbach at Magnum Media and distributed by BBC Studios, has had major ratings success in Europe. Following the original top UK series produced for ITV, The 1% Club has had a strong global rise, launching internationally in the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, France, Israel, Spain and Turkey.
“Multi-award winning The 1% Club is a fun and distinctive play-at-home game show format where the questions aren’t a test of general knowledge but an opportunity to showcase logic, brainpower and common sense. Contestants of all generations and skill sets have a genuine chance to win – or, at least, brag to their friends,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD Original Content and Unscripted Programming, Amazon MGM Studios. “We’re excited to partner with Dean, Andy, and BBC Studios to bring their global hit series – an addictive, family-friendly, and purely enjoyable show – to our U.S. and Canadian Prime Video customers.”
“The 1% Club has captivated millions across the globe through BBC Studios’ success bringing the hit format to a wide array of international markets outside the UK in just the past few years, and we’re now poised for a major expansion with our upcoming launch of a fresh, new version of the break-out series on Prime Video. The powerful global response to The 1% Club is proof positive that the format has undeniable audience appeal, and we’re thrilled to partner with Amazon to introduce this global sensation to the U.S. and Canada,” said Valerie Bruce, General Manager, BBC Studios Los Angeles Productions.
The 1% Club for Prime Video will be executive produced by Ryan O’Dowd and Krystal Whitney for BBC Studios, Dean Nabarro and Andy Auerbach for Magnum Media, and Amazon MGM Studios. Wes Kauble will serve as the showrunner.
