PLYMOUTH, MN — Inspired by a pivotal scene from The Empire Strikes Back, Paul David’s latest single, “Gotta Rewind Myself,”* embodies the journey to self-renewal. In a nod to Yoda’s advice to Luke Skywalker to “unlearn what you have learned,” Paul David’’s song is an anthem for those ready to reclaim their authentic selves. Set against the backdrop of driving guitar riffs and bold brass, this dynamic track inspires listeners to move to its beat, while also challenging them to shed the insecurities that weigh them down.
The single, recorded at Forgiveness Unity Studios in Plymouth, Minnesota, features a powerhouse horn band and showcases the guitar talents of Alex Maiers. “I wanted a fun dance track that gets people on their feet and is really fun to sing,” says Paul David. “This song reflects my journey of letting go of unnecessary burdens—of ‘unf*cking’ myself to reconnect with the way I was before dulling my own shine.”
Reflecting on his journey, Paul David shares, “When I was young, I was taught to care about things—to really give a shit. But as I got older, I realized I was investing in things that didn’t truly matter, like worrying too much about what others thought of me. In high school, I could do anything without regard to reputation. But in college, I wanted to be ‘cool’ and liked, and with that came a painful period of low self-esteem. Figuring out I was gay was one part of it, but the real challenge was learning to accept myself.”
With a degree in percussion performance from Coe College, Paul David’s musical pedigree includes studying under jazz legends like Dr. Paul Smoker and Dave Samuels of Spyro Gyra. A multi-instrumentalist and seasoned composer, Paul David’s influences bring a depth to his music that resonates across genres.
“Gotta Rewind Myself” is available on all streaming platforms, and fans can find additional content–and a more authentic version of the song–on his website.
