New roles for Sports journalists

New roles for Sports journalists

Announcement from Sports Editor Jason Murray and Sports Deputy Editor Matt Rennie:

We’re excited to announce a familiar addition and two promotions in the sports department.

Jeff Dooley is returning to sports as a senior editor with a focus on audience development. In his new role, Jeff will manage a team of enterprise reporters (Dave Sheinin, Michael Lee, Neil Greenberg and Roman Stubbs) and also will oversee audience growth for the sports department, working with all the teams to identify opportunities and ensuring best practices. Jeff will report to deputy sports editor Matt Rennie.

Jeff came to The Post in 2017 as an assignment editor in sports and was soon put in charge of NFL coverage while also editing a number of high-impact enterprise series and special projects. These included reporter Rick Maese’s “Game Changer” series on how climate change is affecting sports, and reporter Roman Stubbs’ award-winning coverage of the intersection between high school sports and society.

Jeff has been an editor for the Special Newsroom Initiatives and Partnerships team for the past two years. In that role, which was based out of the Audience Strategy department, he worked with editors and reporters across the newsroom to develop special projects around large themes that fall outside the typical news cycle – while focusing on reaching new readers. This included “The New Space Age,” a special section on space travel that included contributions from several desks and combined traditional storytelling with immersive visuals and graphics and an interactive space debris game. Other sections included a Cocktails section in conjunction with the Food team, a Future of Work package in conjunction with the Tech team, and the Growth Guide – a package of stories and advice pieces focused on personal growth.

Before joining The Post, Jeff was editor in chief of Pro Football Focus, overseeing the company’s editorial operations and co-hosting a weekly NFL radio show on SiriusXM. He began his career at ESPN.

Michael Errigo has been promoted to assistant editor. In his new role, Michael will help coordinate our high school coverage, working with a team of freelancers to cover schools across the DMV. He’ll also help us put together the cornerstone of our high school coverage: the All-Met teams for fall, winter and spring. He’ll report to night sports editor Micah Pollack.

Michael joined The Post in 2016 as a news aide. In addition to working on the sports copy desk, Michael has covered high school sports extensively. He’s wrote about St. John’s boys’ basketball coach Pat Behan’s battle with ALS and how his team has moved forward without him. He chronicled a group of atypical football players at Clarksburg High School who had never played the game, and he profiled the soccer team at International High School in Langley Park, which was created to serve students who are designated as English language learners, most of them immigrants.

When he isn’t working, he loves reading, watching movies and spending time with family.

Spencer Nusbaum has been promoted to beat reporter. In his new role, Spencer will cover the Washington Nationals along with Andrew Golden. He’ll report to baseball editor Sarah Larimer.

Spencer joined The Post in 2022 as a news aide. In addition to working on the sports copy desk, Spencer has covered high school sports. He wrote a moving story about how three high school basketball teams played through grief after their teammates died. He talked to old-school coaches to see if their tough tactics could still work with a new generation of athletes. He also profiled a Virginia baseball player touted as the American version of Shohei Ohtani.

When he’s not writing or reading about sports, he’s probably out trying new restaurants, playing frisbee or catching up on the greatest reality show of all time: “Survivor.” He also has a twin brother who works in baseball, which he thinks is pretty neat.
