NEW ABC NEWS/IPSOS POLL SHOWS 41% OF AMERICANS APPROVE OF  PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN’S HANDLING OF THE ISRAEL AND HAMAS WAR, 54% DISAPPROVE 

Fifty-Five Percent of Americans Think the United States Has a Responsibility To Fight Terrorism in the Middle East, Compared to 41% Percent Who Do Not Think So

A new ABC News/Ipsos poll released this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” shows 41% of Americans approve of President Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel and Hamas war, compared to 54% who disapprove.

In the poll, conducted by Ipsos for ABC News, using Ipsos’ KnowledgePanel®, 55% of Americans think the United States has a responsibility to fight terrorism in the Middle East, compared to 41% who do not think so. Additionally, 53% of Americans think the United States has a responsibility to protect Israeli citizens, compared to 43% who do not think so; and 46% of Americans think the United States has a responsibility to ensure peace in the Middle East, compared to 50% of Americans who do not think so.

Additional highlights from the new ABC News/Ipsos poll regarding President Joe Biden’s job performance include the following:  

  • 39% of Americans approve of his handling of abortion, 58% disapprove. 
  • 36% of Americans approve of his handling of the economy, 61% disapprove. 
  • 33% of Americans approve of his handling of crime, 64% disapprove. 
  • 26% of Americans approve of his handling of immigration and the situation at the United States-Mexico border, 70% disapprove. 

This ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted using Ipsos Public Affairs‘ KnowledgePanel® Oct. 13-14, 2023, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 518 U.S. adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.5 points, including the design effect. Partisan divisions are 25-25-42%, Democrats-Republicans-independents.
