September 2, 2024 — Netflix has confirmed the production of Mantis (WT), an action that follows Mantis, an ace assassin returning to a collapsed-order hired killer industry after his vacation. Upon reentering this anarchic world, Mantis encounters Jae-yi, his fellow trainee and rival, and Dok-go, a retired legendary killer, and realizes they are all vying for the top spot among the killers.
Mantis (WT) is a spin-off film set in the same hired killer industry universe of the 2023 Netflix film Kill Boksoon, which premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival. While Kill Boksoon explores the story of Gil Boksoon struggling to balance her life as a single mom and a killer, Mantis (WT) will captivate audiences with intense action from Mantis, Jae-yi and Dok-go, each racing towards their own goals. Byun Sung-hyun, who masterfully directed and depicted the menacing contract killer industry in Kill Boksoon, co-wrote the script with director Lee Tae-sung. Lee, who has a strong background as an assistant director on projects such as Kill Boksoon and The King, will make his debut as a feature director with this film.
Yim Si-wan (Unlocked, Emergency Declaration) portrays Han-ul, an ace assassin known as Mantis, working for MK Ent. Previously mentioned by Cha Min-kyu in Kill Boksoon to “have gone on a vacation,” Mantis returns to a chaotic industry in search of new opportunities. Yim Si-wan, acclaimed for his standout performance in The Merciless, is set to bring this character, created by Byun Sung-hyun, to life.
Park Gyu-young (Sweet Home, Celebrity) will assume the role of Jae-yi, an extremely talented killer ousted by MK Ent. after falling out of favor with her bosses. Jae-yi, an old friend of Mantis, harbors complex feelings for him because of his exceptional skills. In addition to delicately portraying the emotions of this dynamic character, Park Gyu-young is expected to show a new side of herself by taking on the challenge in full-fledged action scenes.
On top of this, Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints, Alienoid) takes on the role of the retired legendary killer, Dok-go. Dok-go is the founding member of MK Ent. and the mentor of Mantis. Although he has long retired from active duty, he stepped in as the CEO of MK Ent. after Cha Min-kyu’s death and hopes to bring Mantis back. Expectations are high for this ensemble cast within this fascinating universe.
Mantis (WT) is produced by SEE AT Film Co., LTD, the powerhouse behind films such as Kill Boksoon, Love and Leashes, and Kingmaker.
