New York, NY – January 11, 2025 – Acclaimed soprano and actor Marie-Claire Giraud is set to portray Miss Barnes in Frank Dunham Jr.’s gripping play, Cherry House, running from February 12 to February 16 at Theater Row on 42nd Street, New York City. This powerful production delves into the untold stories of resilience, identity, and sacrifice, offering a fresh perspective on an era often romanticized but rarely explored through the lens of African American history.
Set in 1859, Cherry House follows the life of an African American madam in New York City who jeopardizes her livelihood and safety to protect a wanted woman. As her decision throws her carefully curated world into turmoil, the play explores themes of bravery, community, and the unyielding pursuit of justice against the backdrop of pre-Civil War America.
Marie-Claire Giraud, born on the island of Dominica and raised in The Bronx, brings a wealth of experience and depth to the role of Miss Barnes. A versatile artist, she is celebrated as a soprano, jazz singer, musical theater performer, songwriter, composer, playwright, and actor. Her artistic journey began with operatic training in Rome, Italy, and has since flourished into a multidimensional career.
“This role is deeply personal and a profound honor to embody,” says Giraud. “Cherry House sheds light on an aspect of history that’s rarely acknowledged, and I’m thrilled to contribute to its telling through Frank Dunham Jr.’s masterful storytelling.”
During the pandemic, Giraud had the opportunity to reflect and overcome creative obstacles, which reignited her artistic passions. She wrote her first musical and rediscovered her true soprano voice. With Cherry House marking a significant milestone in her acting career, Giraud is also working on an array of projects, including screenplays, novels, EPs, musicals, and more.
Theater Row is located at 410 W 42nd Street, New York, NY. Tickets for Cherry House are available now and can be purchased through the Theater Row box office or online.
