The Kalamazoo-based musician’s sound has often been compared to John Mayer’s soulful tones, with elements reminiscent of Bon Iver and NEEDTOBREATHE. Jon’s music reflects his unwavering commitment to authenticity and honesty, diving into themes of love, loss, healing, and personal growth.
Jon’s musical journey began at a young age, immersed in a diverse range of influences including breakdancing to DC Talk and playing the flute. His early years in music were also shaped by his time as a musician in the church. However, after struggling to balance his passion for music with his sense of identity, Jon stepped away from music altogether. It wasn’t long before his wife encouraged him to return to his craft, sparking a journey of deep soul-searching that reignited his passion for music.
Jon Hayes debuted as a solo artist in 2018 with the release of his single “Temporary” and has since performed extensively throughout the Midwest and Northeast, including at prominent festivals such as Creation Festival and Soul Fest. His introspective storytelling style and vulnerability in addressing personal themes, including his experience with childhood sexual abuse, has made his music a source of healing for many listeners.
His hit song “Nursery Lie” garnered over 10,000 streams on Spotify within the first six months and received significant playlisting support, including features on Indie Folk Central and Mahogany Coffee House. The success of his music led to the creation of his debut album Between You & Me, which was released in February 2023 and is now available on all streaming platforms. The album, which Jon recorded in basements, offices, and bedrooms with a team of talented friends, encapsulates the joy, sorrow, and hope of living, offering an intimate and beautifully crafted reflection on life and faith.
