'In Her Place', the New Maite Alberdi Film, Will Arrive on Netflix on October 11

The first fiction film by the renowned Chilean director will be shown in some Chilean cinemas in September and will arrive worldwide on Netflix on October 11, after passing through the San Sebastián International Film Festival

Santiago, July 30, 2024 – El lugar de la otra, tells the story of Mercedes (Elisa Zulueta), a shy actuary and invisible woman in Chile in the mid-20th century, who observes the case of the famous writer María Carolina Geel (Francisca Lewin), accused of violently murdering her lover. During the investigation process, Mercedes begins to question her life and identity, looking for her own space to find herself.

The first fiction feature film by Oscar® nominee Maite Alberdi (The Eternal Memory and The Mole Agent) today presented the first images and confirmed its arrival on Netflix on October 11th after its premiere in national cinemas in September and its debut in the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival.

“In Chile in the 20th century, the majority of women convicted of murder were pardoned by justice simply because they were women; convicting them would give them visibility. The pardons always alluded to the madness of the murderers, but no one really listened to their reasons,” says Alberdi about the story after her first feature film.

“In El lugar de la otra, one of these cases is observed by Mercedes, a woman also invisible at that time, who in the midst of the debates about guilt or innocence, understands that prison is relative, and freedom has to do with her own room. That the only way to forge identity and personal and creative spaces is to defend the smallest thing, a place of silence, a room of one’s own, and this is learned by inhabiting the place of the other”, she adds.

Shot in Chile and with the script work of the writer Inés Bortagaray and Paloma Salas, the production is Alberdi’s cinematographic reinterpretation of one of the stories from the book “Las Homicidas” by Alia Trabucco Zerán. El lugar de la otra stars national actresses Elisa Zulueta and Francisca Lewin, who are joined by Marcial Tagle, Gabriel Urzúa, Pablo Macaya, among others.
