Call for 2024 nominations: 41st annual Washington Post Teacher and Principal of the Year Awards

The nomination process for the 41st annual Washington Post Teacher and Principal of the Year Awards is now open through January 29, 2024.

The Teacher of the Year Awards recognize educators whose passion for education exceeds all expectations. These teachers put their students first, creating a classroom environment of joy and positivity where any student can excel across the Washington metropolitan area. The 2023 Teacher of the Year recognition went to Charles Whittaker, an HVAC teacher at the Center of Applied Technology North in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, who focuses on the development of his students through personal connections, teachings of real-world problem solving and being a lifelong role model.

The Washington Post Principal of the Year Award aims to acknowledge principals who are determined to enrich their schools in all aspects of education. The 2023 Principal of the Year recognition went to Dr. Liza Burrell-Aldana, principal of Mount Vernon Community School in Alexandria City, who goes above and beyond for her students where no one is left behind at her dual-language school. Her love for teaching and learning is depicted throughout her student’s exponential improvement on test scores, faculty environment and passion for education.

In order to be eligible, teacher and principal nominees must be holding full-time roles in grades prekindergarten through 12, have a minimum of two (2) years of experience, be serving in the current 2023-2024 school year, and work in one of the specified jurisdictions in the Washington metro area. Final materials are due to The Post by Monday, January 29, 2024.
