Over the past decade, Portugal. The Man (www.portugaltheman.com) has established themselves as one of rock’s most prized possessions and a live phenomenon. Originally heralding from Alaska, the Portland-based band – comprised of John Gourley, Zach Carothers, Kyle O’Quin, Eric Howk, Jason Sechrist and Zoe Manville – soared to new heights in 2017 with the release of their RIAA certified-gold album, Woodstock marked by the astounding success of their infectious GRAMMY-Award winning single “Feel It Still.” The band will be appearing at Civic Center Plaza in support of their latest releases, the 2023 album Chris Black Changed My Life and collaboration single with LP Giobbi “Bittersweet.”
Portugal. The Man follows local SF label Dirtybird’s ‘Back To Baysics’ show which drew thousands of fans to Embarcadero Plaza for a summer day of fun and celebration. It will also be the second event produced by APE at Civic Center Plaza following this past June’s concert with Fred again.. x Skrillex. Announced as a surprise days before the show, the ticketed event sold-out in record breaking time and drew 25,000 fans to the green in front of City Hall and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
Building upon these events geared towards revitalizing the city through music, Another Planet Entertainment and its management arm Another Planet Management has been involved with many public area shows this season. Most recently APE completed its 16th edition of Outside Lands. A true celebration of all things San Francisco, this year’s festival–which took place August 9-11–drew 200,000 fans over the three days to Golden Gate Park. “The prevalent narratives about Outside Lands 2024 will understandably center on Chappell Roan drawing yet another gargantuan crowd, Grace Jones putting on an unimaginable performance masterclass, Kacey Musgraves joining fill-in headliner Sabrina Carpenter on stage, and Sturgill Simpson’s first live performance in three years,” shared Adrian Spinelli in his review for UPROXX “But it also absolutely needs to be that Outside Lands 2024 was the most well-produced version of the Golden Gate Park megafest yet.” Added Paulo Ragusa of CONSEQUENCE, “…the booking felt different than 2024’s general festival fare, and it helped make an event like Outside Lands all the more special.”
The following weekend, this past Saturday, August 19, APE returned to the park to launch the Golden Gate Park Concerts at the Polo Field series with System of a Down and Deftones. Selling out in record time, 50,000 fans attended the groundbreaking new outdoor, live music experience. Granted by the City of San Francisco, it marked the first-ever headline concert to take place in Golden Gate Park after dark. The concert series will provide key economic benefits for San Francisco, while helping contribute to the prevention of cuts to City parks and programming.
Other free shows for the City APE was involved with this summer include Downtown First Thursdays which brought acts like Aluna, Kaleenah Zanders and APE management artist Vandelux to free block parties held monthly starting in June, while APE management clients DRAMA and Poolside (coming up on August 25) will have performed free shows as part of San Francisco’s long-running Stern Grove Concert Series.
“There’s a narrative out there about San Francisco,” APE’s Allen Scott, President of Concerts & Festivals told to the Los Angeles Times, “that we’re in a doom loop or there’s urban decay and all that. While we have problems in San Francisco and the Bay Area, these are similar problems that are happening around the country in other cities. But this is where we live. So we’re doubling down on San Francisco. We want to show the world what San Francisco is all about and why it’s a world-class city.”
