Amanda Finnegan named deputy features editor

2023 Siena International Photo awards for Post photojournalists

Announcement from Executive Features Editor Ben Williams and Deputy Features Editor Hank Stuever:

We are excited to announce the promotion of Amanda Finnegan to Deputy Features Editor, in which role she will oversee our travel, food, home, advice and parenting coverage and dream up new ways to expand and synthesize service journalism at The Washington Post.

Amanda’s innovative work in developing the By the Way section from a one-page memo to a 2019 launch makes her an ideal fit for this role. With a combination of fast-breaking news coverage – most recently, responding to the Baltimore Bridge collapse with well-read stories on how to escape an underwater car and the phenomenon of bridge anxiety – ambitious features like last year’s epic guide to regional pizza styles and smart service like the 52 definitive rules of flying, By the Way reimagined travel coverage at The Post. The team has built one of The Post’s largest Instagram followings and a loyal newsletter subscribership, which both won Webby Awards in 2020.

Amanda started at The Post as an intern; after a stint at the Las Vegas Sun, she returned to The Post in 2012. Since then, she’s edited The Fix during the Trump administration and education, transportation and Retropolis on the Metro desk. Before By the Way, she was a homepage editor, planning coverage and running the page through Olympics, inaugurations, terror attacks and mass shootings. She is currently splitting time between Chicago and D.C. but will return to D.C. permanently next year.

Please join us in congratulating Amanda. Her new role starts immediately.
