Statement from The Washington Post Publisher and CEO William Lewis on WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich

Today we stand in solidarity with Evan Gershkovich of The Wall Street Journal, following his shocking sentencing to 16 years in prison by Russian authorities. Evan’s wrongful conviction is an affront to journalism and to democracy, and we must all now join the campaign to get him home.

In addition to Evan, we must not forget about Austin Tice, Alsu Kurmasheva, Vladimir Kara-Murza, and other journalists who are being imprisoned illegally just for doing their jobs. We also recognize Monday, July 22, 2024, as the 10-year anniversary of our colleague Jason Rezaian’s arrest in Iran while doing his job and reporting for The Post.

Journalism is not a crime.
