May 3 – Before representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, Olly Alexander will be awarded a coveted Gold Blue Peter badge and read a special CBeebies Bedtime Story.
Blue Peter is the longest-running children’s television programme in the world, and the Gold badge is the programme’s highest award, of which only a handful are awarded each year. Previous awardees include their Majesties The King and Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Sir David Attenborough, Greta Thunberg, Steven Spielberg and Marcus Rashford. He receives the award in recognition of his music career, representing his country in the Eurovision Song Contest and inspiring young people across the UK to always be their true selves.
In Friday’s episode, Olly will also attempt to break his first ever Guinness World Record on the show. Inspired by his track Dizzy that he will perform at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, he attempts the world record for the most objects caught whilst spinning on a chair in sixty seconds. He also takes on guest presenter duties and a ‘here’s one I made earlier’ moment in the kitchen baking Eurovision cookies, alongside showing off his hula hooping skills answering Blue Peter fan questions.
Audiences can watch Olly guest presenting and being awarded his Gold badge on this week’s Blue Peter (Friday 3 May) at 5pm on CBBC and BBC iPlayer.
Swapping the main stage for the iconic yellow chair, Olly Alexander will also read a CBeebies Bedtime Story to families across the UK ahead of the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
He will delight viewers with a reading of Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival, an uplifting story about celebrating diversity and what makes you you.
The story follows Norman who loves his new wings, and has the most fun ever trying them out high in the sky. But then he has to go for dinner. What will people think? Norman feels the safest plan is to cover his wings with a big coat. But hiding the thing that makes you different proves tricky and upsetting. Can Norman ever truly be himself?
Olly Alexander says: “I grew up watching Blue Peter, so it was an absolute honour to be a guest presenter and be awarded the GOLD Blue Peter badge! It was a proud moment and I’m very thankful. I’ve also loved to read all my life so I was really thrilled to tell a Bedtime Story. I thought ‘Perfectly Norman’ was the perfect tale to encourage kids to embrace who they are.”
Olly Alexander joins the stellar slate of famous faces to have read a CBeebies Bedtime Story including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, David Tennant, Harry Styles, Guz Khan, Jodie Whittaker and Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Olly Alexander’s CBeebies Bedtime Story will air at 6.50pm on Saturday 11 May on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer.
