Wendy Stuart will be hosting TriVersity Talk! this Wednesday at 7 PM ET with featured guest Brian Kaufman. This episode is a part of The Best of Triversity Talk series that takes place on the first Wednesday of each month.
TriVersity Talk! is a weekly web series with featured guests discussing their lives, activism and pressing issues in the LGBTQ Community. With TriVersity Talk!, the goal is to laugh and learn.
TriVersity Talk! Is part of TriVersity’s ICARE Initiative. ICARE stands for Increasing Community Awareness through Relevant Education. ICARE Programs are generously funded by The Greater Pike Community Foundation.
Brian Kaufman has a Ph.D. in psychology and over 40 years of experience as a Professor. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, he’s worked with queer community organizing and activism in Albany, Norfolk, VA, and Augusta, ME. Upon moving to Maine in 1990, he joined ACT UP/Maine, was elected to the Board of the Maine AIDS Alliance, and also worked to reduce bullying and suicide through training and outreach in collaboration with LGBTQ+ organizations and community centers in urban and rural communities. For thirty years, he facilitated social support groups serving broad regions of the state and was Chair of GLSEN and SAGE chapters. In providing advocacy and programming for youth and adults, the need for compelling, engaging, and purposeful activities was noted. After many years of observing the life cycles of Gay-Straight Alliances and other social support groups, the most common issues presented by attendees were incorporated into the design of a ready-to-use activity made especially for affirming the queer community, but suitable for allies as well. With his late husband, arts educator and performer Martin Swinger, they spent approximately 15 years developing, testing, and tuning the Rainbow Quest! board game activity using feedback from other psychologists, historians, teachers, and activists. The resulting game is fun to play and creates a safe space for all to share impactful discussions, develop a sense of authentic pride, and form closer relationships with other players. Dr. Kaufman now resides near the beach in Asbury Park, NJ with his dog Riddle, after winning a grievance related to his alleged ‘gay privilege.’
