Announcement from director of Audio Renita Jablonski, Investigations editor Peter Wallsten, executive Local editor Jamie Stockwell, National editor Philip Rucker and Graphics director Chiqui Esteban:
We are thrilled to share that our colleagues’ work has been recognized with three nominations for the Peabody Awards, among the most prestigious honors in broadcasting and digital media. The first two nominations, announced Tuesday, are in the Radio/Podcast category: “The Empty Grave of Comrade Bishop,” and “Post Reports: Surviving to Graduation.” The third, “The Blast Effect,” was announced Thursday in the Immersive and Interactive Storytelling category.
These consequential stories were told through multiple platforms and left an impression with jurors for their humanity. These nominations are a testament to the extraordinary collaboration across our newsroom departments – from the Audio team’s close work with the Investigative unit and Education desk to the National desk’s collaboration with Graphics and other teams around the room.
In “The Empty Grave of Comrade Bishop,” Martine Powers, along with Ted Muldoon and Rennie Svirnovskiy, set out to get new answers for the people of a Caribbean nation who have long suspected the U.S. government has more to account for after invading Grenada 40 years ago. A propulsive seven-part series revealed new questions around how the U.S. shaped the fate of the island and its potential role in the missing remains of a beloved revolutionary leader killed in 1983.
“Post Reports: Surviving to Graduation” is a three-part series which was published on our daily afternoon podcast in which Sabby Robinson, Hannah Natanson and former colleague Moriah Balingit take listeners into the raw realities of a school struggling with the consequences of frequent gun violence and experiencing themselves during the reporting, the unthinkable.
In “The Blast Effect,” a groundbreaking story from our “American Icon” series examining the rise of the AR-15, Post staff combined deep, revelatory reporting with gripping animations and intricate design to provide an unflinching yet respectful portrayal of how bullets fired by AR-15-style rifles decimate human bodies.
The winners of the 84th annual Peabody Awards will be announced May 9.
Please join us in celebrating these nominations and the work behind this group of compelling storytelling.
