The song was inspired by Christmas 2023, an unusually snowless holiday in Minnesota. Rain replaced the iconic snowdrifts, and plans with family and friends were canceled. For Paul David, it marked the fifth Christmas without his parents and another year apart from his sister’s family in Seattle. Alone with his emotions on Christmas Day, he penned the heartfelt lyrics, later pairing them with a melody reminiscent of classic holiday tunes.
“I wrote ‘Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas (Without You)’ for anyone who feels the absence of someone or something important during the holidays,” says Paul David. “Whether it’s a loved one, a friend, a pet, or even a treasured tradition, loss feels magnified this time of year. But the season moves on, and I wanted the song to reflect that mix of nostalgia and hope.”
The single harkens back to the golden age of holiday music, drawing inspiration from icons like Andy Williams and Dean Martin. Paul David also weaves in tributes to beloved Christmas classics, including A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The familiar sounds of holiday cheer create a warm, seasonal embrace while acknowledging the complexity of emotions the holidays can bring.
“Doesn’t Feel Like Christmas (Without You)” was written, performed, recorded, and mixed entirely at Forgiveness Unity Studios in Plymouth, Minnesota. The track features the extraordinary guitar work of Alex Maiers, adding depth and texture to the nostalgic arrangement.
Paul David is a Coe College graduate with a degree in percussion performance, where he studied under renowned musicians including Dr. Paul Smoker and Dave Samuels of Spyro Gyra.
