Drew Barrymore in Conversation with TCM Host Jacqueline Stewart:

TWENTIETH CENTURY (1934) – 3:30PM
Join actress, entrepreneur, award-winning talk show host Drew Barrymore and TCM host Jacqueline Stewart for a conversation about Drew’s love of classic film, featuring a screening of TWENTIETH CENTURY (1934), starring her grandfather, John Barrymore.

When John Barrymore asked director Howard Hawks why he wanted him to play histrionic theatrical impresario Oscar Jaffe in this trailblazing screwball comedy, Hawks replied, “It’s the story of the biggest ham on Earth, and you’re the biggest ham I know.” Barrymore accepted on the spot and quickly bonded with the director. This was the first of Hawks’ great comedies and one of the first Hollywood films in which glamorous stars like Barrymore and Carole Lombard made fools of themselves on camera. It was also hailed as a departure from Barrymore’s run of dramatic and swashbuckling roles in films like  Don Juan  (1926) and Grand Hotel  (1932). When Lombard, cast as the rebellious star Barrymore needs for his next production, had trouble capturing the film’s comic spirit, Hawks and her co-star worked tirelessly to get her to loosen up. With Barrymore’s help, Lombard became a top star, often hailed as “The Daffy Duse.”

Meryl Streep in Conversation with TCM Host Dave Karger:

40th Anniversary of OUT OF AFRICA (1985) – 7:00PM
Join acting icon Meryl Streep and TCM host Dave Karger for an illuminating conversation before a special 40th  anniversary presentation of OUT OF AFRICA (1985). Streep had already earned two of her three Oscars when she took on the role of Baroness Karen Blixen (pen name Isak Dinesen) in director Sydney Pollack’s adaptation of Blixen’s autobiography of her time running a coffee plantation in early 20th century Kenya. Shot on location, the role gave Streep a chance to create a nuanced, layered performance that stands out even against the film’s spectacular scenery. In addition, Blixen was one of the strongest, most self-determined women Streep had played on screen to that point. It was a breakthrough in the cinematic portrayal of women 40 years ago and continues to reflect the star’s deep commitment to women’s rights and women’s history. The film brought Streep the sixth of her record 21 Oscar nominations for acting while capturing seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
