Lauren Morello joins General Assignment as deputy editor

Announcement from General Assignment Editors Gina Harkins and Keith McMillan:

We are excited to announce that Lauren Morello is joining the General Assignment team as a deputy editor, helping to lead breaking-news coverage and quick-turn enterprise reporting.

Lauren brings to this role experience shepherding coverage on urgent developments in areas such as science, health and politics. For nearly two years, she helped direct coverage of the global coronavirus pandemic as a deputy health editor at Politico, where she edited national scoops on testing, vaccine development, and deployment and political interference at federal health and science agencies. At the start-up Grid, she led coverage of science, health, technology and climate change, and launched a successful health newsletter. Most recently, Lauren oversaw 2024 campaign coverage, polling and money in politics at the Messenger.

Lauren also served as senior editor and Americas bureau chief at Nature, where she expanded the magazine’s reporting on U.S. politics and edited award-winning coverage of a historic Ebola outbreak, the rise of CRISPR gene editing, and the environmental fallout of oil and gas drilling.

She began her career covering climate change and Congress at E&E Publishing, where she helped launch ClimateWire and traveled widely for stories — including camping on the summit of the Greenland ice sheet.

Lauren earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and English from Drew University and a master’s in science journalism from Boston University.

Please join us in welcoming Lauren to The Post. Her first day is July 22.
