Steve Wright sits down with Peter Kay for Steve Wright’s Peter Kay Christmas Special and Barbra Streisand and Nicole Scherzinger join Michael Ball
Radio 2 and BBC Sounds welcome Peter Kay, Barbra Streisand and Nicole Scherzinger in what will be a Superstar Sunday for listeners on Sunday 3 December 2023.
Helen Thomas, Head of Radio 2, says: “Superstar Sunday on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds will be very special indeed. Peter Kay speaking exclusively to our very own Steve Wright is Sunday morning gold, and Michael sitting down with Barbra Streisand and Nicole Scherzinger is sure to be a joyous listen!”
In Steve Wright’s Peter Kay Christmas Special, (10am – 11am), Steve sits down with much-loved comedian and TV star, Peter Kay, in this one-off Christmas treat. Peter picks his favourite songs as he reminisces and chats about his best-selling memoir, TV: Big Adventures on the Small Screen, for this exclusive hour-long show. Peter relives a childhood obsessed by TV and how his perseverance and passion for the small screen set him up for a career in comedy. Highlights include how Peter and a barking dog nearly upstaged Sir Paul McCartney on the world’s biggest stage; the day when three Knights of the Realm – Sir Michael Parkinson, Sir Michael Caine and Sir David Attenborough – helped him do his tie up; his own rendition of the theme to Blockbusters; plus music from the TV shows that Peter grew up with, including Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Mork & Mindy and Minder (10-11am, Sunday 3rd December and on BBC Sounds – BBC Audio production).
Peter says: “What an early festive treat it was for me to chat to broadcasting legend Steve Wright. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope everybody else does too. Feliz Navidad.”
Steve says: “I am Peter’s biggest fan and I’m also pleased to call him my friend so please tune in for this very special radio programme.”
In The Michael Ball Show (11am – 1pm), Michael is joined by two award-winning megastars of music, film and stage: Barbra Streisand and Nicole Scherzinger. Michael has been a fan of Barbra Streisand – who has released her autobiography, My Name Is Barbra – since he was seven years old and credits her with being the reason he pursued a career as a performer. During the interview, to Ms. Streisand’s delight, he recalls listening to her records as a little boy living in South Africa. They go onto discuss her childhood and the strained relationship with her mother, overcoming the stage fright which has plagued her career, her frustration about negative news stories, her pride in her son Jason Gould’s singing career… and her love for cooking hoisin spare ribs. These two performers have much in common, as you will hear. Michael is also joined by ex-Pussycat Dolls singer and actor, Nicole Scherzinger, who is currently wowing audiences in London’s West End playing the iconic role of Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (11am-1pm, Sunday 3rd December and on BBC Sounds – a Listen Entertainment production).
Michael says: “I feel very lucky to be speaking to two of the world’s most loved singers on my Sunday morning show. I’m looking forward to chatting to Barbra about her incredible new book, as well as hearing about her childhood, her struggles with stage fright, and her love for cooking! I will be quizzing Nicole about her stunning portrayal of Norma Desmond that’s currently wowing the West End, her life in London and whatever else takes our fancy.“
Both programmes are available on BBC Sounds for 30 days after their broadcast on Radio 2.
