Electro Jazz Pop Attack, This Just In
On the heels of their last single, Find Out, the Minneapolis Indie-Pop jazz-adjacent collective, Dilly Dally Alley, fronted by the soul conduit and siren of eccentrically expressive alchemy, Sophia Spiegel, unleashed their second single of the summer, This Just In.
This Just In incites an indie art pop riot through wavy-with-delirium reverb, intersections of John Carpenter-esque synths, intensely abrasive electro pulses, and distorted jazz-punk sax riffs which amalgamate to instil euphoric catharsis and liberation from emotional discord.
The frantically versed opening lyrics – “there was a sharpness in the land, sharpness in the beat, sharpness in your eyes, made me feel complete” – convey how emotions can often conflate in conflict as the avant-garde instrumentals synthesise a visceral visualisation of the all too resonant phenomenon.
This Just In is available to stream on all major platforms now, ahead of their sophomore LP in January 2025.
Dilly Dally Alley said:
“This Just In narrates how it feels to be pursued romantically, not knowing if it will all work out, and the uncertainty sending sparks of electricity through the encounter. It also reflects on my time at Yale; and how I became overwhelmed by the competitiveness, intensity, and desire to tear the institution apart for their 40-billion-dollar investment in weapons”
Amelia Vandergast, Executive Editor at A&R Factory said:
“As lightness meets lyrical depth, Find Out opens a doorway to rhapsodic bliss with a juxtaposing key of edgy off-beat style and an all-consuming sense of jazz-collective-next-door soul.”
About
The founding folks of Dilly Dally Alley first convened in the Summer of 2021 after Sophia Spiegel left the life of a social worker behind her. Armed with a handful of original tunes and the motivation to bring them into fruition, the songwriter and cellist enlisted friends and former classmates Max Voda (bass), Kevin Yetter (drums) and Will Kjeer (keys).
After clumsy humble beginnings, the band found their groove as the world emerged from the pandemic and plugged into the Minneapolis jazz scene. The late-night jam sessions would always see a variable line-up of musicians cycling in and out; to this day, the band serves as an amoeba for the jazz community in Minneapolis, playing host guest musicians, interactive crowd games, and performances involving a plethora of different communities.
Dilly Dally Alley released their debut album in May 2023 and have since acted upon their local jazz community’s encouragement to spread their sound far and wide; the passion from within the local community has become a catalyst for the band’s determination to gain reverence outside the Twin Cities. Though their jazz background brought the band together, their sound oscillates between punk, techno, hyper-pop, or whatever they’re feeling at the time.
Known for their “pop smarts, soulful grooves, and deft dance vibes” Dilly Dally Alley has received plaudits from The Current, MPR, RacketMN, Americana Highways, Rootstime, and more.
